Agartala: July 13: Last night, the tragic death of a tribal youth set off a chain of violence and arson in Gandachara subdivision. Miscreants targeted homes and shops in tribal-dominated villages, launching attacks, looting, and vandalizing properties. Fearing for their safety, panic-stricken villagers sought refuge in the nearby jungles.
This morning, villagers gathered in protest, surrounding the Gandachara police station. Their demands centered on increased security and safety measures for their children. The atmosphere remains tense throughout the subdivision.
In response to the escalating situation, paramilitary forces have been deployed to restore order.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee expressed deep regret over the incident. Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha has taken note of the matter and engaged with local workers. Directives have been issued to control the unrest.
A team, led by a BJP minister, is slated to visit Gandachara soon. The state government has also pledged support for the affected families.
Notably, a few days ago, an Ananda Mela (joyous fair) took place at the Tripura Cricket Association’s Gandachara Cricket Ground. Tragedy struck when Parameswar Riang suffered serious injuries from an electric wire during the fair. Despite efforts to transfer him to GB Hospital for treatment, Parameshwar Riang tragically passed away yesterday afternoon. The news ignited resentment among the tribal community, transforming the once-peaceful Gandachara into a fiery situation.
