AGARTALA, TRIPURA: A low pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and is moving northeastward. This low pressure will gradually intensify and turn into a cyclone as it moves northeastward.

According to Scientist-C Dr. Partha Roy of the state’s Meteorological Department, light rain is expected in various parts of the state on Thursday and Friday. The low pressure is slowly moving northeastward and is expected to intensify into a cyclone by the morning of May 25. The cyclone will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to the state’s southern districts, Gomati district, Sepahijala district, and Dhalai district on May 26 and 27. Thunderstorms and winds at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour are also expected.

On May 27, very heavy rainfall is expected in North Tripura district, Unakoti district, Dhalai district, and Khowai district. Heavy rainfall is also likely in other districts of the state, Dr. Roy said.

It is noteworthy that the International Meteorological Department has decided to prepare a list of names for tropical cyclones that form in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, collectively known as the North Indian Ocean. In 2020, the Meteorological Department released a list of 169 cyclones. If the current Bay of Bengal depression intensifies into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Remal’ according to the list. This name was given by Oman. The Arabic word means ‘sand’.
