Ratan announces decision to sell surplus wood (11/7/2018) 
State government has decided to sell surplus swan-wood outside through registered timber exporters of the state against charging eco-sustainable charge of Rs 100 on each cubic feet. This was informed by education minister at a press meet.The council of ministers has approved the guideline for domestic export of swan-wood after getting the verdict of Supreme Court that designated 13 railway stations of the country including Dharmanagar of North Tripura for carrying wood except timber logs.To ascertain the volume of surplus timber, the state government had formed a six member committee headed by PCCF earlier and according to the report of the committee, at present state has extra timber of 5510 cubic metre swan in 2016-17 and 4838.94 cubic metre in 2017-18 financial years and the market value of these timbers stood at around Rs 43.32 Cr.As per estimation, the state would earn about Rs 1.263 Cr from the sale of the timber, which would be spent for ecological balance and restoration of eco-sustainability. Moreover, Tripura government has been contemplating for obtaining green tax from its contribution to carbon foot print and green house gas reduction increasing green cover.
